Award Winners 2010

The 2010 Mayor of London's Green Awards where held at the Globe Theatre on Tuesday 8th June.

The Mayor presented accolades to London's top carbon cutting companies. The winners were all members of the schemes run by the London Development Agency (LDA) to help organisations become more energy efficient to support the Mayor's carbon reduction targets.
 

The Mayor of London presented the following awards to Members of the BBP.

Gold Portfolio Awards

Awarded to the member who has the least carbon intensive London property portfolio within the BBP.

Winner: Hermes Real Estate

Hermes Real Estate is one of the largest real estate managers in the UK, with in excess of £5.8 billion of gross assets under management. Hermes operates across all the primary markets of retail, office and the industrial sectors and believes that a responsible, sustainable approach to real estate investment, management and development is the only strategy that both protects and enhances the value of its assets.

Green Portfolio Awards

Awarded to members whose London property portfolios’ carbon performance meets the Green target
set by the Sustainability Benchmarking Working Group.

Winners: Grosvenor, Legal & General Property, and Workspace Group

Grosvenor is a privately owned property group with offices in 17 of the world’s most dynamic cities. It has
five regional investment & development businesses in Britain & Ireland, the Americas, Continental Europe, Australia
and Asia Pacific. The international fund management business operates across all these markets. As at 31 December 2009, these six businesseshad total assets under management of £10.2bn. The company is committed to promoting best practice across all its business operations and focuses on creating well designed, environmentally sustainable buildings and communities.

Legal & General Property (LGP) is one of the top five Property Fund Managers in the UK with £8.5 billion
of funds under management (as at end December 2008) and a 30 year track record operating in commercial real estate. LGP currently manages 17 Balanced and Specialist property funds, 520 properties and 2,300 tenants through a team of 85 real estate specialists, including 40 Fund and Asset managers. LGP aspires to be at the leading edge of the sustainability agenda acknowledging its business activities result in both direct and indirect environmental impacts and that its responsibilities extend beyond customers and employees to the wider community.

Workspace Group specialises in providing flexible, affordable business space to small and medium sized enterprises
throughout London. The current portfolio consists of 100 business centres, providing approximately 6.8 million sq ft gross of office, serviced office, studio, workshop and light industrial facilities let to over 4,000 business customers, all of which is owned and managed directly by Workspace Group.

Portfolio Improver Award

Awarded to the member who has reduced the greatest amount of carbon emissions across its like-for-like London
portfolio between 2008 and 2009.

Winner: Canary Wharf Group

Canary Wharf Group plc (CWG) is an integrated property development, investment and management group of companies. Over the past 20 years it has regenerated derelict wharves in east London into one of the world’s premier business districts, constructing over 15 million square feet of office and retail space. CWG’s 97 acre Estate is home to some of the world’s leading business organisations, employing over 90,000 workers in a diverse range of sectors. It is also home to more than 200 shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, and 20 acres of landscaped parks and plazas.

CWG has developed strong working relationships with its occupiers and is committed to working together to
improve its environmental performance which has enabled it to make an 11% reduction in carbon emissions across its
managed portfolio.

BBP Building Improver Award

Awarded to members who have made the greatest improvement to a building to reduce its carbon emissions and environmental impact.

Winner: Legal & General Property

Legal & General Property has been awarded the Building Improver Award for the work which has been carried out at 99 Gresham Street, a multi-occupied London Office. LGP worked with its occupiers to carry out simple measures which included upgrading the Building Management System, an overhaul of the chiller system, lighting replacement, installation of a cardboard baler and onsite waste separation facilities. These initiatives reduced electricity consumption by 14% and gas consumption by 21%, saving over 450 tonnes of CO2 emissions, increasing recycling rates by 22% and reducing its occupiers’ costs by over £70,000.

BBP Owner Occupier Partnership Award

Awarded to members who have demonstrated clear action in working with their occupiers in reducing the environmental performance of a buildings or portfolio.

Winner: British Land

British Land is one of the UK’s largest Real Estate Investment Trusts with total assets, owned or under management, valued at £12.7 billion. Sustainability is at the core of the business – from community involvement in the planning process, through to developments and refurbishments – allowing it to offer attractive buildings that minimise resource use and meet the needs of occupiers and local communities, now
and into the future.

British Land has been awarded the Owner Occupier Partnership Award for the work it has been carrying out on its
London portfolio. It has been working in partnership with 30% of the occupiers across the multi-let managed office portfolio to successfully reduce carbon emissions. Across the eight buildings nearly all occupiers have engaged in a Green Memoranda of Understanding which outlines how British Land and its occupiers will work together to incorporate
environmental considerations into how its buildings are run and managed. Over the last year, between them, British
Land and occupiers have reduced their energy consumption by over 8 million kWh, saving 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions and reducing costs for its occupiers by over half a million pounds.
