BBP & MAP Launch online Responsible Property Management Toolkit

09 June 2021

The Responsible Property Management Toolkit (RPMT), a joint initiative of the Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) and Managing Agents Partnership (MAP) has been launched today. The Toolkit will be vital in upskilling asset, property, and facilities management on best practice in responsible property management.

The online Toolkit contains over 50 guidance notes across 13 key sustainability topics, including downloadable checklists and practical ‘how to’ advice. Alongside this, the Toolkit connects readers to a wealth of industry resources and case studies spanning environmental, social and wellbeing issues. The RPMT has been designed specifically for Asset Managers, Property Managers and Facilities Managers - responsibilities are clearly identified with the purpose of embedding sustainability within the whole process of property management. With added functionality allowing users to contribute content, the BBP is calling on the wider sector to contribute to the Toolkit by providing case studies and signposting other resources so that it continues to reflect evolving standards and best practice.

The RPMT has been drafted and developed with the support of over 30 sustainability practitioners from 15 of the UKs leading commercial real estate companies, including CBRE; Cushman & Wakefield; Derwent London; Federated Hermes; Great Portland Estates; JLL; Landsec; LaSalle Investment Management; Lambert Smith Hampton; Picton; Savills; Shaftesbury; Tandem Property; The Crown Estate and Workman LLP. Alongside this, BPR Group and Arup provided technical and written input.

Sarah Ratcliffe, CEO, Better Buildings Partnership said: “The management of buildings plays a vital role in securing sustainability outcomes and this tool kit provides a much needed, practical, resource to help guide and support action. We encourage property owners and managers alike to use the tool kit and embed this guidance in the management of their portfolios. This has been a truly collaborative effort and many thanks go to all of the BBP & MAP members who have contributed to this excellent resource that is now freely available for the whole industry to use.”

Nick Hobbs, Associate, Client Sustainability Lead, JLL said: “The Responsible Property Management Toolkit has always been a valuable resource for property professionals looking to incorporate sustainability into their management operations. We are therefore delighted to have worked with the BBP and industry colleagues to help update it to address new and emerging challenges while still focusing on those traditional considerations which are as important as ever”

Sharon Brown, Director, Real Estate Risk, Compliance and Insurance, Federated Hermes said: “it's been a privilege to act as joint-Chair for this hugely important piece of work. As we move collectively as an industry towards more sustainable management practices and a net zero world, consistency of implementation and supportive property management will become even more important. The Toolkit is a crucial step forward to achieving this. "
