Energy Benchmarks for Large Shopping Centres

Energy Benchmarks for Large Shopping Centres

15 July 2025

The BBP has partnered with Revo to develop a reliable ‘whole building’ energy benchmark for large UK Shopping Centres. The project is helping to drive the improvement of energy performance in large shopping centre assets and is supporting shopping centre owners in complying with regulatory requirements.

There is a need for greater consistency and transferability of methodologies across these assets, and for a focused ‘whole building’ benchmark that is tailored to the specific energy demands of large shopping centres.

Participants have shared data with the BBP’s Real Estate Environmental Benchmark (REEB) project, which is a longstanding industry benchmarking initiative that already collects environmental data from thousands of UK assets annually. 55% of the UK’s largest shopping centres (>50,000m2) already participate in REEB, and this project is expanding this category to include all of the UK’s largest shopping centres.

We encourage large shopping centre owners to join us in this shared endeavour to move the whole industry forwards. Participants benefit from:

  • Shared expertise and insights from collaborating with their peers, and access to a network of owners with similar challenges
  • Access to the public benchmarks produced through this initiative
  • Invitation to a dedicated event sharing more granular comparative data back to project participants

The initial findings from the project can be found in the May 2026 public release, with 70% of the UK's largest shopping centres participating. Indicative EUI values for the centres providing 'whole building' data can be found here, alongside initial conclusions and next steps for the project going forwards.
