Canary Wharf Group Announces Major Lighting Upgrade to Retail Areas

08 September 2015

Canary Wharf Group has carried out a major lighting upgrade across a number of its malls saving more than £400,000 and over 1,951 tons of carbon annually.

The lighting in Canada Place, Jubilee Place and Cabot Place malls, as well as associated car parking areas has been replaced with a state of the art light-emitting diode (LED) system. The upgrade is estimated to have saved an estimated 3.7million kWh (kilowatt hours) of energy annually, equal to the electricity needed to light 5,140 homes in the UK.

The new LED system has been provided and installed by Minimise Energy, part of the Minimise Group of sustainability companies.

Project highlights:

  • An estimated saving of 3,719,360 kilowatt hours per year; equivalent to the average energy lighting requirements of 5,140 homes in the UK, or total electrical consumption of 925 houses
  • 1,951 fewer tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year; equivalent to the amount of CO2 produced in 5.9 million miles of car journeys
  • Lighting energy reduction of 65%
  • Annual cost savings of over £400,000 a year
  • Number of light fittings being replaced: 9,260
  • An additional 5.3 km of strip lighting replaced

As well as enhanced efficiency and low heat output, the new LED system is optimised to enhance the aesthetics of the malls’ many architectural features. The upgrade follows a pilot project in 2014 in which Minimise Energy installed 1.4km of LED strip lighting at Canada Place Mall, reducing lighting energy consumption by 54%.

This achievement represents a continuation of the excellent progress from energy-saving initiatives that led to a total reduction in Canary Wharf Group’s energy use from 89.5m kWh to 82.5m kWh in 2014, and underlines its commitment to making long-term improvements to its sustainability targets.

Canary Wharf Group Sustainability Manager Martin Gettings, said: “The malls on our estate are among the busiest in the UK. This lighting upgrade project not only benefits the environment, but reduces costs and enhances the shopping experience, good for business and shoppers alike.

“We only procure energy from renewable sources, and we are committed to ensuring our operations, people and developments impact as little as possible on the environment. Our overall aim is to make sustainability real in everything that we do. Achievements like this contribute significantly towards these goals and we remain committed to long-term improvements against all our sustainability targets.”

Canary Wharf is well established as one of London’s leading retail destinations, comprising almost 1m sq ft of retail space, including the newly opened Crossrail Place. There are 112,000 people working at Canary Wharf and the estate welcomes over 100,000 visitors each weekend meaning space is highly sought after by UK and international retailers.
