02 August 2023

The Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) have today announced the Government Property Agency (GPA) as their latest member. The GPA is the sixth organisation to join the membership this year, which now represents 54 leading property owners.

The GPA delivers property and workplace solutions across government including delivering the property elements of the Government’s Levelling Up, Net Zero, and the Civil Service Reform initiatives. This includes a significant programme of commercial office developments and investment in its existing estate in all parts of the UK.

The GPA’s vision is to deliver a transformed, shared, sustainable and value for money office estate, supporting civil servants to work productively in every nation and region of the UK. As part of its commitment to sustainability, the GPA is targeting a 50% reduction in direct carbon emissions from the Government’s office portfolio by 2032..

Alongside this, the GPA has an Executive Sustainability Committee responsible for minimising energy, waste and water, improving climate resilience and reducing embodied carbon in construction. Find out more about GPA’s 2020 -2030 strategy here.

Sarah Ratcliffe, CEO, Better Buildings Partnership said: “We are delighted to welcome the GPA to the BBP Membership. The GPA is unique in its responsibility for overseeing the Government Estate, but in common with our BBP members, faces many challenges and opportunities as it works to deliver on its sustainability ambitions. We are looking forward to bringing the GPA alongside our members who are working together to share knowledge, improve professional understanding and transform the sector.”

Dr Miguel Godfrey, Head of Sustainability, at the GPA said: “The GPA has a crucial role to play in the decarbonisation of the built environment. As part of our investment in high quality, productive, inclusive and sustainable work environments in every nation and region of the UK, a key priority for us is building the sustainability skills needed to deliver change on the ground and champion our sustainability goals to make them happen. We are therefore delighted to join Better Buildings Partnership, and look forward to collaborating with other members to further understand key enablers, aligning our efforts and support the delivery of market transformational initiatives.”
