Owner & Occupier Forum
Initiated as part of the Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) Climate Commitment, published in 2019, The Owner Occupier Forum brings together senior real-estate decision makers representing both property owners and occupiers to collaborate with the objective of enabling the transition to a more sustainable real estate sector and delivering net zero carbon buildings by 2050.
The BBP’s Climate Commitment acknowledged that, with as much as 70% of a buildings’ emissions attributable to occupiers’ activities, the commitment of property owners to tackle climate change cannot be delivered without closer collaboration with property occupiers.
One of the greatest challenges in achieving net zero carbon buildings lies in the relationship between owners and occupiers. While they often have zero carbon targets in common, a series of institutional, technical & legal barriers have made progress challenging. The Owner Occupier Forum enables owners and occupiers to tackle these barriers by creating strategic alliances and sharing knowledge to scale up action across portfolios.
Around fifty companies participate in the Forum, with approximately equal representation between owners and occupiers. The BBP is collaborating with several major stakeholder bodies to encourage occupier participation in the Forum including: The Climate Group, The Zero Carbon Forum, The British Retail Consortium, The Legal Sustainability Alliance, The UK Green Building Council, Experience Makers and the Innovation Gateway.
