All properties present opportunities to reduce the environmental impact associated with transport. This may involve employees, visitors, suppliers or business partners selecting alternative travel modes or methods. For example, walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing or combined deliveries.
Primary sustainable transport objectives include reducing the dependency on car travel and limiting the number of journeys involving petrol and diesel vehicles. This may involve considering sustainable transport facilities and services available at a property, or engaging external organisations to connect with local travel networks.
In larger properties, creating a Green Travel Plan and establishing a Green Travel Forum may help to address the travel needs of multiple-occupiers by identifying and co-ordinating the delivery of a range of sustainable transport opportunities.
The growth in sustainable transport reflects the shift towards a low carbon economy and recognition of the health impacts associated with poor air quality. The combination of emerging legislation, alongside changing customer expectations and business operating models, is increasing the demand for alternative travel options.
Consideration of greenhouse gas and other emissions associated with transport relate to a range of corporate reporting requirements, for example, the Streamlined Carbon Reporting Commitment and Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme. Transport also represents an important component of the net-zero commitments made by a wide-range of organisations.

The growth in electric vehicle utilisation may be accompanied by a change in demand for electric vehicle charging facilities.

Local authorities can help to secure discounts on public transport services, for example, and may be able to facilitate access to grants to assist with travel plan measures or provide practical travel planning advice in developing Green Travel Plans.
Public transport operators will usually want to align their services with peak demand, and may schedule timetables to fit with staff journeys and shift patterns, particularly if a property represents a large employee base.
